However long you plan to stay in Berlin it won't be enough - but rest assured, you won't be bored.

If you feel reflective you can wander for hours through vast museum collections of antiquities in the Pergamon Museum, marvel at the ingenious methods used for attempted escapes across the Wall documented in the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, relish the sumptuous decor of the 18th and 19th Century palaces of the Hohenzollern dynasty in Charlottenburg and Potsdam, or simply gaze spellbound at paintings by Durer, Cranach, Ernst, Klee and so many others displayed at the Gemäldegalerie or the New National Gallery, designed by Mies van der Rohe, and many other public and private galleries.

Too strenuous? Try people watching from one of the pavement cafes on Ku'damm, in Prenzlauer Berg or Schönberg with a vast cup of Milchkaffee in front of you, watching Berlin's colourful streetlife unfold before your eyes.

Getting late? You might want to escape the bustle for an intimate meal in a dark Berliner cellar restaurant, surrounded by daguerreotypes from the last century, or enjoy the huge variety of international cuisine - Thai, Spanish, Indian, Chinese, Italian, Indonesian....if you want it, they've got it - offered by this global city.

US and UK visitors should note that there isn't a German expression for "Last orders" or "Last call" - the bars stay open as long as they want to, and if still you're feeling lively past midnight there's probably a nightclub with your taste in cabaret, or music you want to dance to, just round the corner.
